ROUTE MAP

Route MapSince the election in May, 2023, the new Bishop's Stortford Town Council has advocated the development of active travel facilities in the town. To highlight this work, the Council is organising a 'Beating the Boundaries' cycle ride on Saturday, 13th July.

The inspiration for the ride is the ancient tradition of elders within a parish leading an annual walk around the parish boundary, visiting key landmarks along the way so that younger parishioners are taught to recognise the edge of their parish. The key landmarks were often beaten with sticks to emphasise their significance!

The 12 mile cycle ride will take a clockwise route around the edge of the town, following cycle paths, lanes and quiet residential roads for the vast majority of its length. Graham Oxborrow, speaking for Cycle Stortford which is helping the Council to organise the event, commented: "When planning the route we were amazed by what a lovely ride it is - I think people will really enjoy beating the boundaries in July".

All Stortford residents aged 14 or above are able to take part in the ride.  The ride will start at the Council Offices in Windhill at 10am, and event supporters Highway Cycles and Cycle Positive have kindly agreed to make sure that bikes are in tip-top condition. It is anticipated that the ride will take about 2 hours (see poster for details of times).

Town Council CEO Huw Jones said: "I have already pumped my tyres up ready for this great event which is supported by the BID and local cycling businesses.  This is a terrific opportunity for residents to joint together, promote cycling, get some light exercise and to have some fun (as well as reviving an ancient tradition)!  Thank you to Cycle Stortford who have done so much to make this project a reality – Come and join us on the 13th of July!"
