Trail 1 - Reflecting England’s Growing Wealth
Duration approximately 40 minutes.
Medieval, Georgian and Victorian buildings in the old town centre.

Trail 2 - Growing Travel and Commerce
Duration approximately 50 minutes.
The Norman castle mound, coaching inns, maltings and Stort navigation. For this route visit the Tourist Information Centre and ask for the key to the castle mound.

Trail 3 - Shopping and Entertainment

How the 20th Century has replaced Victorian and earlier expansion away from the old town centre.

Trail 4 - The River Stort Navigation
Duration approximately 55 minutes.
The River Stort Navigation, first opened in 1769, brought considerable prosperity to Bishop’s Stortford; barges traded malted barley for brewers in London, returning with timber and coal.

Trail 5 - Waterside Stortford
Duration approximately 3 hours.
Waterside Stortford is a riverside and countryside trail passing through Bishop’s Stortford. The trail features twenty-one information boards along its length showing its history and  wildlife. Cycle or stroll through the 3.5 mile trail enjoying beautiful relaxing views of the water, nature and wildlife. Waterside Stortford winds gently through the valley of a chalk stream and the canal scenes of the Stort Navigation.  

Trail 6 - Children's Trail
Duration approximately 1 hour.
Walk around the town and take part in 'Can you Find'. A free Children's Colouring Book is available from the Tourist Information Centre or downloadable below.
