You are reminded that Bishop’s Stortford Town Council is a statutory consultee on all planning applications affecting the Town however the decision is ultimately made by East Herts District Council.  The District Council will take into account representations made by this council however you should ensure that a copy of your comments is also sent to direct to East Herts District Council at the address given on the notification which you received from them.

The Annual Town Meeting will be held at Rhodes, 1-3 South Road, CM23 3JG, on Tuesday 25 April 2017, at 7.30pm (refreshments at 7pm). The meeting is open to the press and public. This is a forum for Bishop’s Stortford taxpayers to voice their opinions, question their elected Councillors and directly effect change in the community. ‘Flavours of the World’ is a market crafted to stir the senses. Among the atmosphere, accents and aromas you will discover Italian sweets and biscuits from the home of the lightest nougats; cheese that characterises the cultural and culinary identity its hometown; along with cured meats, fuet and saucisson from every corner of France and beyond its borders; and stalls offering ranges of coffee and mustards, brought by traders with the knowledge and passion to enlighten you of the subtleties between them.

Beyond those stalls that tempt the taste buds, the market brings traders arriving to showcase the beauty of craft that exists beyond our shores. From bowls and ornaments, carved from Moroccan marble and Baltic amber, set into handcrafted jewellery; to finely woven Italian clothing, rugs and throws and over 60 scents of soap, forged from olive oil and enriched with argon oils from Alep to Marseille.

The market will take place in North Street from 9.30am.

On 25 May 2017 Students of Hertford Regional College and young entrepreneurs supported by Wenta will become market traders for the very first time at Bishop’s Stortford Youth Market.

Alongside the general Thursday market there will be a range of unique items made and designed on sale created by the students from creative design courses.  It will be a great opportunity to buy presents or brighten up your home with an original piece of art or design work.

Fine Art Practice student Jasmine Willing has been busy working on a new collection of hand stitched cards and photographs following her recent demand at the Hertford Regional College Pop Up shop. She said ‘I am excited about the opportunity to sell my work at the Youth Market. This is an ideal opportunity for me to promote myself and to show case my work in a professional environment. I am looking forward to gaining hands on experience of working as a small business.’

Young Entrepreneurs working with Wenta, a social enterprise that provides free advice, support and training to those starting a business, will also be part of this exciting event. Wenta also run a business start-up incubator at Hertford Regional College’s Ware campus.

The Mayor-elect Cllr Woodward who will be opening the event said ‘the Youth Market is a great opportunity for us to support and encourage young inspiring artists, designers and entrepreneurs to kick start their careers.  We are hoping that this will become an annual event as it is great way for a younger audience to see what it is like to be a market trader. Pitches start at as little as £21.80 per trading day.’

Don’t forget Bishop’s Stortford weekly Market, which is held every Thursday and Saturday in Potter Street, Market Square and South Street also hosts a variety of exciting regular events. The Town Council works in partnership with De Rosa Music Hub to fill the market streets of Bishop’s Stortford with music as part of Music in the Market. The event occurs on the last Thursday and Saturday of the month in different locations around the market. Our Farmers and Craft Market continues on first Saturday of the month from 9.30am to 1.30pm in North Street. Our next event is on 6 May.

The Council is inviting tenders for ice cream concessions at the splash pool and on Sworders field.  The closure date is 12 noon on 2nd December 2016 and full details are available here

Christmas will truly come to Bishop’s Stortford on Saturday 3 December with a number of exciting events, including Bishop’s Stortford Town Council’s Christmas Fayre, St Michael’s Church Holly Fair, the Grove Cottage Santa Dash and Reindeer Run and Bishops Stortford Community Church’s Crafty Christmas, all ushering in the festive season.  Road closures will operate from 6am in North Street, Potter Street, South Street and High Street east of Basbow Lane 

Bishop’s Stortford Town Council’s Christmas Fayre will commence at 9.30am and span North Street, Potter Street, Market Square and South Street, all of which will close for the event and will be filled with Christmas delights. The event includes the general retail market, the Farmers and Craft market and other exciting specialist Christmas stalls. Visitors can pick up lots of Christmas goodies, from gifts such as hampers and handmade jewellery to real Christmas trees and wreaths. Hungry shoppers can keep the cold at bay with many warming delights from our food court located on Market Square.

Children will have lots of fun at Santa’s Grotto, pat some reindeer straight from the North Pole, or ride a pony, have their faces painted or get festive with a glitter tattoo!  Princesses will mingle with crowds, providing photo opportunities for young fans. Everyone will enjoy the fun fair rides and games on the train and the crooked cottage.

There are several arenas with live music and entertainment. Bishop’s Stortford Choral Society will perform traditional carols while Hip Hop Pop Dance Production Company and a local School will entertain with street dance to the latest chart music.

Road closures will be in force on 3rd December from 06.00 to 18.00 on North Street, Potter Street, South Street up to the junction with Station Road, High Street up to Basbow Lane and Market Square with access only available to pedestrians. Ingress and egress will therefore be limited to pedestrians and emergency vehicles only. Apton Road will be available to vehicles for access only.

During the same period the ‘One Way’ system will be suspended on certain roads, allowing for vehicles to drive in both directions. This will apply to Church Street, Water Lane and Barrett Lane.

Also during the same period Church Street, Apton Road, Newtown Road, Water Lane and Barrett Lane will have a weight restriction of 7.5 tons.

Diversions will be in effect to divert traffic around the closed area.

Timings for the event are as follows:
 Road closures, restrictions and diversions: 06.00 – 18.00
 Christmas Fayre Event: 09.30 – 16.00
