Laura Jurd's Dinosaur

Sunday, September 29, 2019 - 3:30pm

Laura Jurd – trumpet, Elliot Galvin – piano, Conor Chaplin – bass, Corrie Dick – drums
Receiving a rare 5-star review in the Guardian for their 2016 debut album, ‘Together, As One’, the band have toured extensively in Europe and beyond at some of the world’s most prestigious festivals including North Sea Jazz, Montreal Jazz Festival and Molde International Jazz Festival. In addition they have collaborated with some of the UK’s most celebrated ensembles including the BBC Concert Orchestra, Northern Sinfonia and the Ligeti Quartet.
The rise and rise of trumpeter Laura Jurd continues apace. A member of BBC Radio Three's 'New Generation Artists' initiative, she has also won a clutch of other notable awards: the 2015 Parliamentary Jazz Award for 'Best Instrumentalist', the Dankworth Prize for Jazz Composition, the Young Jazz Musician Award in 2012 and, latterly, a nomination for her band Dinosaur's album Together, As One in the Mercury Music Awards in 2017. And all this before she's hit thirty!
Although she's highly active in jazz education (teaching at Trinity Laban), perhaps Jurd's biggest teaching scoop has been to show a younger generation that jazz needn't be a music hamstrung by past practices and presentation. Dinosaur, in particular, have found a ready and enthusiastic audience among those who otherwise would give any music carrying the 'j' label a wide berth, regularly packing out clubs and playing to festival crowds far and wide.
For those who haven't heard Jurd – or indeed, who may wonder where younger musicians may be taking the music next – this Herts Jazz appearance is an ideal opportunity to catch one of the hottest improvising tickets in town.
'A mesmerising display of world-class musicianship.' Jane Cornwell, The Evening Standard
