3. DISCUSSION WITH JAMIE SOUTHWELL HCC YOUTH WORKER
Music Events
Members had invited Jamie Southwell to attend the meeting to provide an update on the success of the music evening held at Rhodes. Jamie advised members that two events had taken place, one in April, which had been very successful and one in October, which had been unsuccessful. Jamie explained that he considered that the second event had been unsuccessful for a number of reasons, but the very large police presence at the first evening was considered to have been a factor in putting people off and another reason being that the publicity material laboured on warnings not to attend with alcohol and drugs etc, instead of emphasising the positive fun elements of the evening. He stated that lessons had been learned and he was looking to continue staging music evenings along a different format. He was currently in discussion with Tony Phillips of Realife, St Mary’s School and Herts County Council Music Service with a view to staging two further events, one at St Mary’s School and one at Northgate Activities Centre. Dates were yet to be confirmed.
Youth Shelter
The Assistant Clerk advised members that a sum had been set aside in the Town Council’s budget to purchase a Youth Shelter and the Deputy Mayor, Cllr Mrs Hollebon, was seeking members views on the most appropriate siting for a shelter along with recommendations regarding the most suitable design. Members again felt that the two most appropriate areas were considered to be at Thorley on the land adjacent to the Neighbourhood Centre and in the vicinity of the Skateboard Ramp on Sworders Field. Jamie Southwell stated that he too, along with the County Council Youth Service had been working for sometime with the young people in Thorley Park on a planned youth shelter project and he had applied for a grant in the sum of £12,000 from the Youth Opportunities Fund, which he was confident would come to fruition. Jamie had also been working with East Herts Council regarding a suitable site for the shelter. The young people at Thorley had indicated that they did not particularly like any of the purpose built youth shelters they had seen and as a result Jamie had been working with Hertfordshire Groundworks, with a view to possibly creating an individually designed shelter. Members agreed that the purpose built shelters did not afford much in the way of shelter from the wind or comfort in terms of seating as they were generally open sided with just rails provided as seating.

Donation of Safety Alarms
Final numbers of 6th form pupils at Bishop’s Stortford College were still awaited. Once received, members would be in a position to work out whether suitable funds were available in the Youth Council budget.

The Assistant Clerk advised members that the Bishop’s Stortford Carnival and fun day would take place on 23 June 2007 and members were requested to keep the day free to assist with the staging of the event.
