7.MATTERS RAISED BY YOUTH COUNCILLORS
Recycling
An idea to introduce primary school aged children to the importance of recycling had been raised as a result of a Young Entrepreneurs project at the Herts and Essex High School. The scheme involved the production of a different animal shaped bin for each type of recycled material and members wondered if it would be possible to investigate whether the idea could become a reality. Members considered that the scheme would be extremely expensive to implement due to the cost of designing and producing different shaped bins, however it was considered that it could be equally effective if standard bins were painted as animals.
Mrs Burns stated that she was in contact with the Primary Schools in Town and she agreed to raise the idea with them to ascertain the level of interest. Cllr Mrs Hollebon suggested that an invitation be extended to those officers with responsibility for recycling at East Herts Council to attend a future meeting of the Youth Council in order to discuss this matter and recycling facilities generally. Members also agreed to contact Tesco and Sainsbury’s to ascertain their interest.
Youth Activities
Members had ascertained that the general feeling among young people was that there were not enough things for the youth to do in the Town. Members considered that regular music events would be popular and well attended, with the Rhodes Arts Complex being an ideal venue. Members agreed to investigate the availability of Rhodes and produce a survey which could be circulated in the schools to ascertain the level of interest. The Chrysalis Drug Project and Jamie Southwell could be approached to assist with arrangements, and Mrs Burns stated that she would be in a position to investigate sources for grant funding.
