2. MINUTES OF THE MEETING HELD ON 2 NOVEMBER 2006
RESOLVED: that the minutes of the meeting held on 2 November 2006 be confirmed as a correct record of the proceedings and be signed by the Chairman.
3. DONATION OF SAFETY ALARMS TO SIXTH FORM PUPILS
Members had discussed the proposal to donate safety alarms to female 6th form pupils at their schools and had ascertained that there was considerable interest in the suggestion. Members were asked to ascertain the precise number of alarms required in order that it could be confirmed that there was the necessary funds available in the budget. The alarms were priced at approximately £2 each.
4.PROVISION OF YOUTH SHELTER
Cllr Mrs Hollebon had sought members advice on the level interest among young people in the provision of a youth shelter in Bishop’s Stortford. Members were of the opinion that a shelter would be a good idea situated in either the Thorley Park or Parsonage Lane areas of Town although there was some concern that a shelter could lead to an increase in vandalism. Youth Cllr Miss Newland had carried out a survey of each form in Birchwood School and provided written results for Cllr Mrs Hollebon’s information. Although the results of the survey were very mixed, where indicated, Thorley Park appeared to be the most popular location for a youth shelter.
5. MATTERS RAISED BY YOUTH COUNCILLORS
Pathway adjacent to Hockerill Anglo European College
Youth Cllr Miss Greenwood stated that she had been approached by a pupil who was concerned about the possible closure of the footpath adjacent to Hockerill College and was keen to start a petition against the proposal. The Chairman outlined the reasons behind the College’s application to close the footpath, which included the concern for the safety of the boarding pupils at the school and the regular thefts of equipment from the site. Youth Cllr Miss Walters confirmed that there was a similar footpath which ran through the grounds of the Bishop’s Stortford College and problems associated with this footpath had been overcome by the installation of automatic gates which were locked at 6pm each night. Members considered that as the pupil had such strong opinions against the possible closure of the footpath then he should be encouraged to start the petition.
Street Pastors
Youth Cllr Miss Greenwood advised members that she had met with several people who were currently training to become Street Pastors and who had indicated an interest in speaking to the Youth Council. Members requested that Youth Cllr Miss Greenwood extend an invitation to a future meeting to any Street Pastor who wished to address the Youth Council.
Workshop, East Herts Council
An email had been received from Catherine Whitbourn, Community, Youth and Sports Development Officer, East Herts Council, inviting members to attend a budget consultation workshop on Saturday 9 December at the East Herts Council Chamber in The Causeway. As an incentive, members were offered £25 in gift vouchers. Youth Councillor Miss Jellis confirmed that she would attend on behalf of the Youth Council.
