For the past three centuries, fashion has been affected by politics, social change and popular culture. Both men and women have used what they wear to indicate their status, comply with social expectations, attract or please a partner, or send a message about their own individuality.

Completing the Look: 300 Years of Fashion Accessories will examine how accessories fit into this. Featuring beautiful accessories dating from as early as 1720 up to the end of the 1970s, the exhibition will explore the reasons behind changes in fashion and what we can discover about the lives of people through what they chose to wear.

See Georgian heelless dancing shoes, Victorian bonnets, Edwardian fans,1920s beaded bags, 1950s fur stoles and 1960s headscarves. Discover the secret language of fans, the reaction to the very first top hat and the impact teenagers had on 20th century fashion.

5 Decades of Batik Painting - an exhibition by Batik artist, Noel Dyrenforth:

"As part of the emerging counter-culture of the early 1960's I was eagerly seeking an alternative to the conventional art processes.  I found it in Batik.  Batik had little or no artistic legacy in the West, which liberated me from the contraints of content, style and practice.  Equally I found in Batik a means to resolve the historic dichotomy of art versus craft.  Since those heady days of discovery my passion has continued to infuse my creativity.  The spirt or the work is underpinned by the disipline of the essential technique.  Integrity and sensibilities are constantly being reappraised to enrich the expression."

"I have never been complacent about Batik.  I constantly explore it for my own intuitive, creative ends; I interrogate its methods, concepts and challenges.  Rules are broken, re-defined; risks are taken.

The recurring themes in my work are about the cutting forces in society - I am aware that we live in an increasingly fractuous society.  The system is encroaching upon our liberties, undermining our democracy day by day without us realising it."

"Creating art out of hot wax and liquid colour into cloth, otherwise known as Batik, presents a challenge.  Yet, Noel Dyrenforth, a leading internationally known artist in this medium, has produced some of the most innovativeand skilled work over the last four decades.  His inspired work and teaching pioneered a fresh appraisal of this 2000 year old textile tradition."

Rudolph G. Smead - curator, publisher and batik collector.

“This is stand-up as it should be: snappy and smart, occasionally nasty, and always funny” The List
    Supporting is… Glenn Moore
Within his first 10 gigs, Glenn was a finalist in So You Think You’re Funny? and a runner-up in the Chortle Student Comedy Awards. Since then, he’s gone on to regularly perform across the UK, for the likes of Jongleurs, Off The Kerb and Komedia. At the 2014 Edinburgh Fringe, he was part of the prestigious AAA Stand-Up Late showcase show. In 2016 Glenn took his debut hour Glengarry Glen Glenn to the Edinburgh Festival. The show sold out and garnered great reviews.
Glenn is also one half of the critically-acclaimed sketch comedy duo Thunderbards, who had a sell-out run at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2014, as well as a show at the Fringe the previous year voted one of GQ’s ‘Top Ten Funniest Shows at the Fringe’. In 2014, they were finalists in the Hackney Empire New Act of the Year competition, performed on McAuley And Co on BBC Scotland, and had two jokes from their show Seconds included in the Daily Mirror’s and the Edinburgh Evening News’ top ten funniest jokes of the Edinburgh Fringe. In 2013, they were runners-up in the inaugural London Sketchfest, which saw their inclusion in the Independent’s ‘Best Comedy of the Year’ alongside Louis CK and Bo Burnham.
As a writer, Glenn is known for his silly one-liners on Twitter, and has also written for BBC Radio shows including The Now Show and News Jack. He is currently writing for CITV’s Scrambled.

His 2015 debut solo show at the Edinburgh Fringe Day Release was met with rave reviews, described as “drum-tight, as if polished by a sitcom writers’ room to cram as many jokes in as humanly possible”. A prolific writer, Steve has contributed material for Mock The Week , 8 out of 10 Cats and Russell Howard’s Good News.

  • There and Back Again – An Odyssey

    Saturday, May 27, 2017 - 1:00pm

Follow CBeebies Patrick Lynch as he uses a pioneering mix of live cinema and theatre to take you on a thrilling ride across the magical world of ancient Greece.

The use of multiple cameras magnifies in wide screen our table-top pup-petry down to the smallest detail, turning a storm-in-a-teacup into an Ae-gean tempest, laying out the fundamental fable hidden in this classic of world-literature and proving that no matter how far you roam, there's no place like Homer.
