  • thescreen: Dispossession: The Great Social Housing Swindle (PG) including Q&A with Luke Doonan

    Saturday, September 23, 2017 - 8:30pm

For some people, a housing crisis means not getting planning permission for a loft conversion. For others it means, quite simply, losing their home.
Dispossession: The Great Social Housing Swindle is a feature documentary directed by Paul Sng (Sleaford Mods – Invisible Britain) and narrated by Maxine Peake, exploring the catastrophic failures that have led to a chronic shortage of social housing in Britain.
The film focuses on the neglect, demolition and regeneration of council estates in London, Glasgow and Nottingham, and investigates how the state works with the private sector to demolish council estates to build on the land they stand on, making properties that are unaffordable to the majority of people in the UK.
Dispossession is the story of people fighting for their communities, of people who know the difference between a house and a home, and who believe that housing is a human right, not an expensive luxury.
The evening includes a Q&A with Luke Doonan. Luke is a renowned TV presenter, interior designer and property developer throughout the UK and Europe. He recently presented two series of the awarding winning and ever popular property show, A Place in the Sun. His career and passion for all things property has led him to become Channel Fives Wright Stuff Property Expert and is a regular guest expert on BBC London news, BBC London Radio, Talk Radio and LBC radio. In 2016 he started his own production company, 215 Productions. A company that creates socially driven TV programmes and documentary films, this production being his latest venture.
The Q&A will include special guests to be confirmed.

  • thescreen: ROH Live Encore - The Magic Flute (12A)

    Sunday, September 24, 2017 - 8:00pm

Mozart’s glorious opera The Magic Flute is brought enchantingly to life in David McVicar’s production with beautiful sets by John Macfarlane.
Prince Tamino promises the Queen of the Night that he will rescue her daughter Pamina from the enchanter Sarastro. He begins his quest, accompanied by the bird-catcher Papageno – but all is not as it seems…
David McVicar’s classic production embraces both the seriousness and comedy of Mozart’s work. The audience is transported to a fantastical world of dancing animals, flying machines and dazzlingly starry skies. The setting provides a wonderful backdrop for Mozart’s kaleidoscopic score, from the Queen of the Night’s coloratura fireworks to Tamino and Pamina’s lyrical love duets and Papageno’s hearty, folksong-like arias.
As well as being a comedy The Magic Flute is an expression of Mozart’s profound spiritual beliefs: Enlightenment concerns with the search for wisdom and virtue are at the heart of this enchanting tale. The Magic Flute was an instant success with audiences and Mozart’s supposed rival Salieri described it as an ‘operone’ – a great opera.
