The Minibus Trust was set up to enable elderly and disabled people from Bishop's Stortford to reach local day centres where they can meet and socialise for the day. It runs three minibuses, which are at present all used regularly during the week, driven by people who have a small amount of time on their hands.
The insurance stipulations are that drivers over 70 yrs of age need to have an annual medical to enable them to continue driving, and there are several reaching an age where it will become more difficult for them to continue. The Trust will not be able to function without new drivers and the more on the list, the less time is needed by each individual.
The time involved is to collect from resident's homes at the beginning of the day and take them to the appropriate centre. The day is then free until around 3pm to do the reverse drive, which could take up to one and a half hours. The driver is not required to support at the day centre.
If you are above the age of 25 with a clean licence, and think you can spare a day or two a month to give these elderly people the chance to continue having a day out, please contact the number below for more information.
Even better, come with a friend as escort, and the two of you will have a fun and rewarding day together. Escorts do not need to be able to drive but must be over 17 years of age.
